In this newly built neighborhood, it is forbidden to dry laundry on the balcony because it would disturb the image of the architecture.
Urban planning, security, surveillance and sanitation: every square centimetre of urban public space is designed, organised and managed. Nothing is left to chance; there are no places where things are allowed to happen spontaneously.
To my mind this has an enormous effect on the quality of life in our cities. The modest signs of other people’s lives have disappeared from our cities without notice: bedding hung from the windows, washing on washing lines, children playing in the streets, black clothing as a sign of mourning. This change has contributed to making our lives increasingly anonymous.
