Police station

A huge fingerprint stretches across the glazed frontage of the entrance to the police station on the Heemstraat. It is a good print, the kind the police like to find. From close by only a decorative pattern of lines is discernible. At a distance, however, the print comes into sharp focus.

Inside the building there are five further fingerprints on the stairwell’s glazed ceiling. They form the fingers of a hand. Five representatives of different nationalities from the local population were asked to give their fingerprints. It is impossible to tell which fingerprint corresponds to which nationality. Every individual – irrespective of colour or ethnicity – has his or her own unique fingerprint.

Front: glazed glass, 300×450 cm, 80×180 cm.
Skylight: transparent foil, 5x 200×300 cm.
